Assam Dairy Farmers Stage Protest Against Govt.

The Sitajakhala Dugdha Utpadak Samabai Samity, a dairy board of Assam has thrown away around 1000 litres of milk into the Killing River in Jagiroad in protest against the Central government policies of dairy farming and the state government’s negligent attitude towards the farmers.

The farmers’ staged an indefinite protest following the anti-local policy of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Purabi, a local dairy brand in front of their office in Jagiroad. The Samity has urged the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government to take strict measures against Purabi Dairy as it has tried to interfere with the local milk production.

Chairman of Sitajakhala Dugdha Utpadak Samiti, Rajib Sharma said that the Assam government has signed an agreement through Purabi Dairy with Gujarat based NDDB depriving the local dairy farmers of getting the proper value of their production supplied to Purabi.

The protestors, however, said that they would continue their protests unless the government cancelled the agreement.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the government should address the Sita Jakhala dairy farmers.
