The Director-General of Police of Assam Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Friday assured that the police force is service-oriented towards public safety and security and cannot domineer or subjugate the citizens of the state.
The DGP stated in connection to the incident of a police official thrashing a differently-abled minor boy at Bharalu in Guwahati city on Thursday evening. The DGP accepted it was the mistake of the police officer and said such behaviour will not be tolerated and stressed, "Any police official guilty of such actions will have to undergo a seven-day capacity building workshop to reform their behavior and attitude".
He further announced a 'Child-Friendly Resource Centre' has been started by the police force a few days ago. He said that the Assam Police is always there for the well-being of children.
Mahanta also said, "Even I may have hit someone at some point in time during my service, sometimes, we are compelled to do so. There are times even we make unintended mistakes. I believe we should accept our mistakes".
The DGP also acknowledged the sacrifice of the three police officials who succumbed to coronavirus infection and extended his condolences. Furthermore, the Mahanta informed, "1044 Assam Police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 so far and 313 are undergoing treatment," adding, "The infected police personnel is being inquired twice every day and their families are being taken care of as well".
