Assam | Dip in Juvenile Crime Cases: Report

The report of a government data released recently stated thatthe number of crimes committed by juveniles in Assam under various sections ofthe Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Special and Local Laws (SLL) has beenreduced.

As per the report, a total of 192 cases were registeredagainst juveniles under different crime heads of IPC and SLL during 2017 inAssam.

The figures show a decrease from the figures of 2016, when a total of 436 crime-related cases of juveniles were registered in the state.

Out of the total number of cases registered in 2017, 183cases were registered under the IPC. The cases include six cases related tomurder, one for causing death by negligence, 50 for causing hurt and grievoushurt, two cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, 30cases relating to kidnapping and abduction, 10 rape cases, 25 theft cases, 18cases related to burglary, three with rioting while 38 were cases of othercognizable IPC crimes.

The report further stated that another nine cases were registered against juveniles under different heads of SLL during the year under review. These cases are related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

The data further reveals that a total of 33,606 crimes werecommitted by juveniles in 2017 nationally as against 35,849 in the previousyear.

According to the report, most of the juveniles apprehended under various sections of the IPC and the SLL in the state were either illiterates or had education only up to the Metric level.

According to the data, a total of 191 juveniles wereapprehended for various cases across the state during the year of 2017.

Aclassification of such juveniles shows that as many as 55 were illiterates,while 37 had primary education and another 83 were in the category of aboveprimary to Matric status. Only 16 such juveniles had educational qualificationof Matric to Higher Secondary level and none above the Higher Secondary level.

As for the family background, 116 were living with parents, 12 were living with guardians and 63 were homeless.
