Assam Floods Claim Six More, Toll at 50

The current wave of floods in Assam claimed another six lives on Monday taking the toll to 50. While 21 lakh people in 27 districts have been affected by the floods, 2,015 villages have been submerged underwater.  

Meanwhile, 26 people have died so far in landslide in different parts of the state according to the data of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The release from the ASDMA said that six deaths were reported from Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kamrup, Golaghat and Sivasagar districts. As per the release, 60,696 people were lodged in 480 relief camps across the state. Barpeta continues to be the worst-hit district, with more than five lakh people affected.

Moreover, the Sub-Divisional Administration of Bokakhat Sub-Division has put in place prohibitory orders on the movement of vehicles on the inundated stretch the National Highway 37 between Kohra and Bagori have been inundated with water.

On the other hand, direct communication between Upper Assam and Lower Assam has been snapped. However, certain alternate routes have been highlighted by the government.

People travelling from the Guwahati/Nagaon side towards Bokakhat, Golaghat, or Jorhat may now divert through Borghat (Nagaon-Dhing Charali) via Hojai.

Alternatively, these vehicles may also divert from Kaliabor Tiniali and proceed towards Upper Assam districts like Dibrugarh and Tinsukia via the North Bank districts.

These alternate routes will have to be followed by the people traveling to Upper Assam until further order.
