Assam Govt Does An About-turn, Says Ordinance Only To Help Locals

In what appears to be a largely conciliatory move, State Minister of Industry and Commerce, Chandra Mohan Patowary today said through a tweet that the ordinance passed by the Assam Cabinet is only for MSMEs, and not for large industries. The Minister added that the ordinance will not be applicable to the hazardous industries, and that no industries will be allowed in the Eco Sensitive Zones.

The tweet came after the ordinance aimed at promoting industrialization created uproar in the state. Scores of people, who were outraged by the decision that they thought would harm Assam in the long run, took to various mediums to air their grievances.

While many termed the ordinance as being harmful to the natural bounties of the state, many others alluded to the recent Baghjan crisis, where alleged dereliction of duties by a foreign company resulted in a massive fire, posing a threat to the nearby Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Many others also held the ordinance to be in flagrant violation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
