Dikom Butterfly, a speciality tea produced by Dikom tea Estate near Dibrugarh today created a world record by selling one kg of tea at a whopping Rs 75,000 kg surpassing recent record set by nearby Maijan tea Estate of Rs 70,501.
The Dikom General Manager S J Chaliha was ecstatic with this record-breaking price and admitted that he did not expect it to go that high. "But this is a validation that good tea has price. I am happy especially it came as a ray light when the tea industry as a whole is passing through an unprecedented crisis".
The tea is bought by one of the oldest tea shops in Guwahati M/s Assam Tea Traders for their customers. They have bought a lot of speciality tea in the past auctions at record prices.
In sale no.33, the tea had been sold through J Thomas & Co Private Limited. The tea had been produced at the Dikom Tea Estate.
Mr. Dinesh Bihani Secretary Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association says that "In the world of tea this auction centre has created an image of a place where records are meant to be broken and history is meant to be re-written"

But these record-breaking prices do not give a true picture of the doomed tea industry. Assam produces around 150 million kg of tea annually at an average price of Rs 144 while the cost of production is Rs 170. This has sent the 175-year-old industry into a tailspin with no sign of relief forcing the Indian Tea Association (ITA) to officially give advertisement announcing the crisis.
Meanwhile, the buyer said it is exotic tea. In the evenings these exclusive tea bushes witness a fleet of butterflies & hence the name reflects the meticulous care & attention to crop husbandry in Dikom's tea fields. This surreal experience of walking along the tea bushes surrounded by butterflies is out of the world.
