Bihu sets in, pushing aside electioneering

The heat and dust of electioneering have given way to the cool breeze of spring to usher in Bihu as people from all walk of life from Sadiya to Dhubri in Assam has jumped in to join the festivity and fervour of the Bihu.

With perfect weather, there are the abundant mood of festivity everywhere as the beat of “Dhol” and “Pepa” have resonated across the Brahmaputra valley.

There are hundreds of  Bihu organizing committees all over Assam and in Guwahati, there are no less than 100 with the top four Lataseel, Chandmari, Noonmati, and Bharalu kick-starting four-day festivities.

Guwahati city was deserted today as almost 60% of its populace have moved out to their native places. Since yesterday, there are heavy rushes in the bus depot and trains going out of Guwahati. “I have booked my ticket to Gohpur almost a week back,” said Amitabh Barua.   He bought the ticket through online portal Red Bus.

Competitions of “Bihu Kuowari”, “Bihu Rani” and “Bihu Samagri” will start from today with Lataseel throwing the “Bihu Samagri” on  Wednesday evening.

The” Bihutolis” of Guwahati in particular will start their functions from this morning while in rest of Assam it will be done on a convenient day as for logistical reasons most of the “Bihutolis” of the first few days of Bohag month are confined to Guwahati.

The start of the evening is Kusum Kaliash, Bipin Chaudang,  Krishna Moni Nath, Simanta Sekhar, Neel Akash, Kalpana Patowary and of course Zubeen Garg.  However, the participation of Papon is not known.

The Upper Assam has, however, having a good time as the election in the five Lok Sabha constituency was over and people could participate freely. But for people Nagaon and Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency, the Bihu is spoiled as an election is just three days away and electioneering is going on in full swing.
