At a time when the base of Assamese literatures was fast losing its strength due to British aggression and other external forces, the initiative of one individual brought back life in the literary scenario of Assam.
The individual was legendary Assamese litterateur Hemchandra Baruah and the initiative – Hemkosh. Hemkosh is the sole reason for the rise of Assamese literature during that period, till today.
Hemchandra Baruah was not just a litterateur; he guided the Assamese society towards development, paving path for a new Assam. Remembering the legend, the whole of Assam came out to observe Baruah's death anniversary on May 01.
A 10 ft bronze statue of Baruah, built by the Sadin-Pratidin group and Hemkosh Publication, was unveiled at Gauhati University by Chandrashekhar Kambar, President of Sahitya Akademi, commemorating the legend on his 122nd death anniversary.
An event was also organised at the university premises where, for the first time, the Hemchandra Baruah Bhasha Sahitya Sadhana Award and the Hemkosh Pran Devananda Baruah Samaj Chetana Award were awarded. Ellora Vigyan Mancha was conferred with Hemkosh Pran Devananda Baruah Samaj Chetana Award.
Golok Chandra Goswami, who was awarded the Hemchandra Baruah Bhasha Sahitya Sadhana Award, donated the awarded money for the development of Assamese literature.
