CAB has to come first then NRC: Himanta

The central government will reintroduce Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament in November and a new NRC to be prepared under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this on Monday. Sarma was on a one-day visit to Barak Valley to deliver a talk at Silchar on the significance of the abrogation of Article 370 from Kashmir.

"Our government under the leadership ofNarendra Modi and Amit Shah has made it clear that CAB has to come first thenNRC. We need a bill…cannot allow infiltration to continue. So we need a bill to stop this," Sarmasaid.

Regardingthe NRC, he said, "The Bharatiya Janata Party does not believe in it as itbecame opposite of what we wanted it to be. We will tell the Supreme Court thatthe BJP rejects the NRC. It is not a document of identity of the Assamesepeople."

"We have held public meetings to explain to the people thatall the interests and existing legal provisions in the northeast region for thebenefit of the indigenous people will be protected. We respect the inner linepermit (ILP) system, Sixth Schedule provisions", Sarma added.
