CAB: Women intensify protest in Manipur

More than hundred women vendors from the Ima Market in Manipur have been staging protest against the Central government's move to pass the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha.

Several women vendors from the famous all-women market spent the Sunday night in the middle of the road in protest against CAB. After the women vendors refused to vacate the protest site and to go home, police resorted to tear gas shelling and used rubber bullets.

Police also resort to lathi-charge to disperse the protesters. More than ten women were injured during the incident and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to reports, the women vendors of the market regrouped after the police crackdown and resumed their protest late in the evening. The women vendors also resolved to impose shutdown of the most important market of the State till February 11.

Earlier, noted filmmaker-director Aribam Shyam Sharma from Manipur has announced that he would return the Padma Shri award bestowed on him in 2006 in protest against CAB.
