Chidambaram Willing To Remain in CBI Custody Till Monday

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who wasarrested in connection to the INX Media scam, was willing to remain in custodyof the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till Monday in an unprecedentedoffer to the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Chidambaram, who was dramatically arrested from hishome last week is in CBI custody till today and will be produced before a trialcourt when it expires.

The offer was made after Justices R Banumathi and AS Bopanna said that they would hear Chidambaram's plea on September 2 in whichhe has challenged the trial court for sending him to CBI custody. If the CBIcourt turns down the investigating agency's request on Friday for sending himback to its custody, Chidambaram might be sent to Delhi's Tihar jail.

However, the judges, who did not comment on theoffer said that they would announce their decision on September 5 onChidambaram's plea challenging the Delhi High Court's August 20 verdict denyinghim anticipatory bail plea in the INX Media money laundering case filed by theEnforcement Directorate.

The top court also extended the interim protectionfrom arrest granted to Chidambaram till September 5.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and AbhishekManu Singhvi appearing for Chidambaram told the court that since the pleachallenging the remand orders is listed on September 2, the former minister isoffering to remain in CBI's custody till then.
