COVID-19 Patient Dies of Alleged Suicide

A Delhi-based journalist (37) who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi allegedly died by suicide. As per various media reports, the deceased jumped from the fourth floor of the hospital building on Monday afternoon.

The deceased reportedly worked for a Hindi newspaper, and was a resident of Delhi's Bhajanpura area. He lived with his wife and two children.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), Devender Arya reportedly said that the journalist was shifted to ICU after he jumped off the building.

The trauma centre of AIIMS has been converted into a full-fledged COVID-19 facility, and the deceased was being treated there.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Minster Harsh Vardhan has asked the AIIMS Director to form a panel to investigate the matter. The Minister reportedly said, "I've ordered AIIMS Director to immediately constitute an official inquiry into this incident, following which a high-level committee has been set up & shall submit its report within 48 hours."

A statement issued by AIIMS said that the journalist was making recovery, and was about to be shifted to the general ward from the ICU. A family member of the deceased reportedly said that he found the news of the suicide unbelievable, as the victim possessed great mental strength.
