Tripura has the highest COVID-19 death rate in the NE region. Out of the state's total infected tally of 21,507, 239 have succumbed to the contagion. The state's positivity rate stood at 6.09% compared to the national positivity rate (8.01%).

This was informed by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today.

In the latest data released by the Ministry, it is seen that the death rates of Assam and Meghalaya are 0.35% and 0.79% respectively. Moreover, the death rate of Sikkim stood at 1.03% while that of Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are 0.63%, 0.28% and 0.18%.

A report by Hindustan Times quoted the West district magistrate Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav as saying earlier, "People did not maintain social distancing and that's the reason for surge in the coronavirus cases in the district and mainly in Agartala."

"In order to prevent deaths, we have focused on conducting tests extensively. We have also started satellite mapping of the positive cases to deal with the situation. We also found that delay in admission of patients in the hospital resulted in their death and we urge people that if they have Covid symptoms, to contact hospital or health centres immediately," he further said.
