The waste dumping ground located near Deepor Beel will be shifted to a new location. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Guwahati Municipality Corporation (GMC) to shift the waste dumping ground from present location to Chandrapur area within two months.

The NGT in its order has directed the GMC to take steps to shift the dumping ground from the present site near Deepor Beel in Pachim Boragaon to the proposed site in Chandrapur area within July 16. The NGT further directed GMC to submit an affidavit regarding the steps taken for shifting the dumping ground from the existing place to the new site at Chandrapur.

It may be mentioned here that several environmentalists as well as civil bodies have been urging the government to shift the dumping ground from Pachim Boragaon alleging that the garbage disposed of at Pachim Boragaon has been polluting and intoxicating the water at Deepor Beel, which is one of the recognized wetlands for undertaking conservation measures on the basis of its biological and environmental importance.
