Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan has proposed that road cum rail bridge coming up at Bogibeel on Brahmaputra river be named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a mark to respect to the former Prime Minister who had laid the foundations of the bridge way back in 2002. Phukon said that he will soon write to Assam chief minister in this regard.
"The Bogibeel bridge should be named as Atal setu , after the name of the former Prime Minister. Chief minister of Assam should take up the matter with Centre" , said Phukan.
He said that the construction part of the bridge on Brahmaputra river at Bogibeel was almost completed and it should be inaugurated on December 25 next as the day is birthday of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Once completed the bridge will connect Dibrugarh with Dhemaji district in northern bank of the river.
The 4.95 km long bridge is touted as country's longest rail cum road bridge. The Bogibeel bridge project was declared as National project of Indian Railways.
Assam government has already communicated to Prime Minister Office for inaugurating the bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
