Dongri Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to 13

The death toll in the Mumbai building collapse whichtook place on Tuesday has risen to 13. The dilapidated building in Dongri areacollapsed taking down over 10-12 families along with it.

At least 40 people were feared trapped when theunauthorized building collapsed in the congested bylanes of Dongri.

According to reports, the building was unauthorizedand the officials of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority(MHADA) quickly shun responsibility and said that it was not under supervision. 

However, activists demanded stern action against civicofficials after the major accident. Moreover, in some letters released by bothBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and MHADA showed that both theagencies were aware of the situation in the Kesarbari building but failed to domuch.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said thatthey have given permission to redevelop that area and that it will be foundafter investigation if the redevelopment initiative was delayed. He said thatat present they are focusing on rescuing trapped people.

The CM also announced ex-gratia of Rs. 50lakh to eachof the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured and that thegovernment would take care of their medical expenses.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carries out search operation with the help of the sniffer dogs at the collapse site.
