Dy CM House, Shopping Mall burnt in Itanagar

convoy attacked, INC summons state Congress leaders

Arunachal’s Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein’s residence and the DC office in Itanagar were burnt down while the Chief Minister Prema Khandu’s residence was attacked by a 3000 strong mob, which was repulsed by the paramilitary forces.

The situation in Itanagar and twin town of Nahrlegun is completely out of control as the protestors of belonging to 18 organisations attacked even the army convoy conducting flag march.

The protestors were today further provoked with the death of one in the police firing even as the original 48 hours bandh call ended this morning. Another youth received injuries today as police fired in blank this morning to protest CM’s house.

The protestors were protesting against the government decision to give permanent residence certificate to some tribals groups belonging to Assam. This was however quickly rescinded by Arunachal Government but that did not end the protest, which has clear political undertone with the full backing of the Congress.

This morning the deputy CM residence was the first target and after completely destroying, the mob marched towards Chief Minister Prema Khandu’s house where they fought a pitched battle with the paramilitary forces. The force, however, managed to save Prema Khandu’s family and his house. It was not sure whether Mr Khandu was inside the house or not at that time.

Meanwhile, the huge commercial “Tatar Complex” at Naharlegun was completely vandalized and then burnt by the protestors who also targeted the office of the All Nishi Students Union.

Even the army column doing the flag march to bring calm in the street was attacked. So far 57 vehicles have been torched all properties of the first international Itanagar film festival was burnt to ashes.

The popular Naga rock stars like Alobo Naga have taken to Twitter to appeal for compensation as properties worth crores were destroyed and all they were taken therefrom either Guwahati or Mumbai.

The Congress has tacit support to the protest and it is suspected that Congress President Takam Sanjay was behind the violent agitation. In fact, Congress president Rahul Gandhi also tweeted in this regard. The entire Congress leadership of Arunachal Pradesh have been summoned by Party President today to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also has appealed for calm but the pattern of violence is not going down and it will soon have a political ramification as increasingly BJP leaders and MLAs are dumbing BJP to join Congress in the past one month.
