Elephant calf rescued in Mornoi

Anelephant calf that fell down into a well in Mornoi area in Goalpara districtwas rescued with the help of locals on Sunday morning. The elephant calf wasexpected to be one and a half year old.

Thecalf was found in a dry but deep well on Saturday night by a group of locals inFuturipara village under Mornoi police station and heard anguished cries of theanimal. After closely following the source of the sound, they found the calfhelplessly stuck in the well.

"The baby elephant was struggling hard to get out of the well," said a local. Following this, a local NGO with the help of locals called in a bulldozer and excavated a steep path down to the well to hoist the elephant out of the well. As per the reports, the elephant calf is expected to weigh between 90-120 kg which is the usual weight of an elephant calf. Shockingly, the officials of the forest department have not visited the spot, though they were immediately informed about the elephant calf.
