First Passenger Train Via Electrified Territory Reaches Kamakhya From Delhi

In yet another landmark event, the first passenger train via electrified territory has reached Guwahati's Kamakhya station from Delhi on Friday.

Brahmaputra mail has become the first passenger train to complete a journey of more than 2000kms and reach the Northeast through electrified traction.

The train later left Kamakhya station for Delhi via the same electric line.

Taking to Twitter, Northeast Frontier Railway said, "Brahmaputra Mail today became the 1st passenger train @RailMinIndia reaching NE completing its journey from Delhi to Kamakhya of more than 2000 kms through electrified territory. DN Brahmaputra Mail also left Kamakhya for Delhi with electric traction. Thus starting a new era."

Yesterday, the first-ever electric run of a loaded train upto Kamakhya was successful. The UP NTSK parcel with the electric locomotive reached Kamakhya around 9.20 am in the morning on Thursday.

"Another milestone towards a faster and environment-friendly mode of transportation," NF Railway had tweeted.

NFR officials say it was a step towards the electrification of all the main and branch lines across the region as this would translate into huge savings for NFR, one of the costliest zones for Indian Railways because of expenditure on diesel locomotives and maintenance of tracks and railway facilities on tough terrain.

Until yesterday, electric locomotives of trains from the rest of the country had to be detached at Cooch Behar and a diesel locomotive attached for the onward journey.
