Gogoi terms NRC as ‘wastepaper’
Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said that Assam will not a get an error free National Register of Citizens (NRC) on August 31.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi said, “The NRC which will come out on August 31, I suspect it won’t be correct and it will just be wastepaper.”
“We have seen that in draft NRC several genuine Indian citizens’ names are not there and even there are instances of foreigners names getting included,” he claimed.
The NRC exercise has come under attack from the state government and the state unit of the BJP, too, who have been demanding re-verification, a plea which was turned down by the Supreme Court.
The government may consider legislative options to deal with wrongful inclusions in the final list of National Register of Citizen in Assam, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal indicated after his meeting with the Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday.
