An opposite picture of what Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal claims to be Green Assam, has been seen in Janata Bhawan campus in Dispur, as the Assam Government itself has taken up excessive deforestation in the complex recently. The PWD department and the State forest department have jointly cut down the trees in the Assam Secretariat premises.
As per the reports, more than 20 trees were cut down so far by the concerned departments. Reports also suggested that the trees have been cut down so that people could have a better view of the newly constructed building of the secretariat. Sources informed that the deforestation initiative in the secretariat has been taken up as per a ‘beautification project’.
It may be mentioned here that Assam CM Sonowal on the occasion of World Environment Day had said that more trees should be planted in Assam to become the number one State in the country and one among pollution-free State in the world.
Meanwhile, the public also condemned the cut down of trees in Secretariat complex and demanded action by the CM.
