With Vijayadashami being celebrated across Assam on Tuesday, the Durgotsav has come to an end.
In Guwahati, the idol immersion, also known as Visarjan, of Goddess Durga is taking place at Kachomari ghat in Fancy Bazaar and Pandu ghat and three other ghats – Saukuchi ghat, Chunsali ghat in Noonmati and Basistha ghat.
Before the idols are taken out for Visarjan, women were seen putting vermilion on Goddess Durga’s forehead and feet after which they applied it on other women present around them.
It may be mentioned here that Vijayadashami is celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian subcontinent. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura to help restore dharma. In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymously called Dussehra.
