Himanta Biswa Unveils PRANAM Commission

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday evening launched the PRANAM Commission at GMCH Auditorium in the city.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Sarma said that "PRANAM Act, first of its kind in the country has been implemented in the state. The implementation of the Act will compel Assam government employees to take care of their respective parents. The Act also has provisions for helping siblings with physical or mental disabilities".

The first-of-its-kind legislation has got Assam Governor's assent and has become a law in the state . PRANAM Act – is aimed at ensuring that employees do not neglect their loved ones in times of need.

Sarma said that before enforcing the Act, a three members commission has been constituted. The commission to be headed by V.B.Pyarelal, IAS. The commission will look after all issues related with the Act. The name of the commission will be PRANAM commission.

The Act has provisions for deducting 10% of an employee's pay and transferring it to the account of the relatives concerned. Another 15% would be deductible if the employee has a differently abled sibling.

The parents or needy siblings who feel neglected can lodge complaints with the head of the department of the person.
"It is aimed at ensuring that employees do not neglect their loved ones in times of need. It will ensure that all government employees look after their dependents including parents" , added Sarma.
