Iran sues US in World Court for leaving deal and imposing sanctions

Iran has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the United States of America in the International Court of Justice at The Hague, alleging that Washington's decision in May to impose sanctions, after pulling out of the Iran Nuclear Deal violates a 1955 treaty between the two countries.

The announcement came from the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, on Tuesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif through twitter saud that Iran is committed to the rule of law in the face of US contempt for diplomacy and legal obligations.

However the US Department of State was quick to fire back. An official from the US State Department said that Iran's application held no merit and Washington would defend itself before the World Court.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump withdrew United States from the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran, reached by his predecessor and other world leaders, and imposed strict sanctions on Tehran.
