Heavy rain in the last 48 hours have claimed lives of at least seven people in Jammu and Kashmir. Five people of a family in Gandoh area of Jammu's Doda and two in Kathua district were killed in two separate incidents due to landslides and floods
"Five people were killed on spot. We have announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to next of the kin of the victims. Compensation of Rs 1 lakh has also been announced to repair the damaged house,", said Deputy Commissioner of Doda Simranjeet Singh.
The rise in water level of Sewa and Ujh rivers in Kathua district caused havoc in many areas. "2 deaths have been reported so far. But we have managed to rescue other people who were trapped in floods," said Sreedhar Patil, SSP Kathua.
Many villages in Bani and Billawar Tehsils were also flooded following heavy rain in the area.
