Unlike Assam, Telangana also reels under flood for years but now they have come up with a permanent solution to solve the problem by setting up the world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation scheme 'Kaleshwaram Project' which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao recently.
The project not only will solve the irrigation problem but willalso solve the state's flood problem and this project can also be implementedin the state of Assam in order to prevent flood for which lakhs of people haveto suffer every year.
The total cost of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project waspegged at around Rs. 81,000 crore but later rose to Rs. 92,000 crore.
At a time when Assam has spent crores of money in preparing the dossier of dredging of Brahmaputra, construction of embankments, construction of Express Highways in order to control the flash floods, Telangana has prepared the multi-crore lift irrigation project to control the Godavari River.
The Telangana CM, while speaking on the project said that about 5000 TMC water is available for the state of which they will get a share of 3,200 TMC from Krishna and Godavari rivers. The government procured 50,000 acres of land to set up the facility, reimbursing the people displaced with Rs. 8,500 crore. It houses 11 motors running on 40 megawatts, 19 pump houses, 20 barrages, 203 km-long tunnels, 1,531 km-long canals and 98 km-long pipelines all of which are operated by 60,000 workers.
The project site also boasts of 16 helipads at various placesnear the project for ease of access.
The CM further stated that the scheme would provide irrigationfacility to 45 lakh acres for two crops which will also provide water to theambitious Mission Bhagirathi drinking water supply project.
The project would also help in supplying drinking water to onecrore people in Greater Hyderabad on daily basis as, also16 TMC of water to thousandsof industries in the state.
