The Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency which had been a Congress stronghold, is still with the national party. Sitting MP Gaurav Gogoi has been successful in retaining the seat with 786092 votes.
By a margin of 209,994 votes, the much talked about AGP-BJP alliance candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta (AGP) trailed with 576098 votes.
Mahanta contesting elections from this seat stirred controversy as the candidate resigned from the leadership of AASU and joined AGP refuting speculations of him filing nominations.
However, Gaurav Gogoi, son of former CM Tarun Gogoi, was quite sure of retaining the constituency, which had never accepted any BJP candidate since 1967.
