Karnataka Assembly hanging after no party wins majority

The results of Karnataka assembly election was declared on May 16; however, interestingly, no single party won majority. BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) emerged as the strongest party with victory in 104 seat. The Congress won 78 seats, JD(S) won 37 and others 03.

BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats but fell short of the magic number of 113 to form the government.

Both BJP and the Congress-JD(S) alliance have staked claim to form the government after their leaders met the Governor on May 15. BJP, led by BS Yeddyurappa and senior party leader Ananth Kumar, sought to prove majority on the floor of the House.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and JD(S) CM candidate HD Kumaraswamy also met the Governorand said that they have the required numbers to form the Government.

The Governor has asked all parties to wait till the Election Commission formally declares all the results.
