KMSS Stages Mass Protest Against New Land Policy

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has staged a mass protest at Chachal in Guwahati against the decision of the new land policy passed by the Cabinet.

The KMSSdemands to withdraw the new land policy which is against the indigenous peopleof Assam and also demands land acquisition for the people of the state.

Speaking toPratidin Time, KMSS Chief, Akhil Gogoi said, "The BJP government assured thatthey will provide land patta to the indigenous people of the state but the newland policy passed by the Cabinet says that the Assamese people will not getland patta."

Gogoi saidthat the state government has deprived the indigenous people of the state toprovide land and that they are more anxious about providing land for theindustrialists. As per the new land policy, three bighas of land are to beallotted for the landless but the policy itself is a rather vague one.

It was announced a while back that thelandless farmers will receive eight bighasof land, however, this policy was later amended by the Government. 65,000families are residing in the hilly areas of Kamrup (M) and 20,000 families inthe plains. Although these families have been residing in the same place fordecades, the Government has still not been able to secure land pattas for these indigenous people."

The KMSS demandedfor a new land policy where all the indigenous people residing in the State forlong years, are provided with land in the same spot of their current residence.
