AFSPA set to be withdrawn from Assam

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is set to bewithdrawn from Assam after long 29 years.

As per reports, the Centre has asked the armed forces toplan its return from the state soon.

The act was imposed in the state on November 27, 1990 as themilitant outfit ULFA carried out its ferocious atrocities during that period.

Former Union minister P Chidambaram criticised the NarendraModi government on Friday after a newspaper reported that the Centre wasplanning to withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA,completely in Assam.

"BJP criticised the Congress Manifesto promise to reviewAFSPA," Chidambaram tweeted. "Now, Modi Government is planning to withdrawAFSPA totally from Assam! During the campaign, Mr Modi never answered thequestion why AFSPA was withdrawn from Tripura, Meghalaya and parts ofArunachal Pradesh.": Chidambaram added.
