Villagers of Sonari's Sapekhati village hacked a leopard, which had been on a rampage since the past few months and have attacked a number of persons from the village and nearby areas.
It may be mentioned here that the leopard had entered the village and attacked an elderly person. On hearing his frantic calls for help, the villagers came in numbers and attacked the feline with sharp weapons and sticks. After the death of the leopard, some villagers cut-off its nails, skin, and portion of tail.
The injured person has been shifted to Dibrugarh for better medical treatment. He injured his legs and hands in the attack.
The body of the dead leopard was later taken away by the forest officials.
It may be mentioned here that due to the loss of their habitats owing to the rapid urbanisation, leopards often stray into human settlements in search of food and this leads to the clashes between the felines and humans. In most cases, the poor felines are hacked to death by the people and their body parts chopped off to be displayed as prized possession later on.
