West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, leading to speculation that the meeting is an effort to rescue former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar who is under the CBI’s scanner and is believed to be closer to her.

The West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Chief, is on a three-day visit to the national capital and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday during her visit. She described her visit as a ‘government to government’ meeting and said that the discussion was mostly on development issues of the state.

Banerjee, while asked whether she had discussed anything on NRC, said that nothing was discussed on NRC with PM Modi. “The BJP can make political statements wherever they want. My meeting with PM Modi was not political,” said Banerjee.

However, the important issues like NRC has not been discussed with the PM saying that they had not met to discuss any political issue.

The Bengal CM also told reporters that she had sought time from Shah, insisting that it was part of her routine exercise as Chief Minister to meet the union finance and home ministers during her trips to Delhi.

Banerjee said that she will not have time to meet the finance minister but will meet the home minister.

Several TMC leaders and former Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar have come under the CBI scanner in connection with a ponzi scam related to the Saradha group.

The Saradha group of companies allegedly duped lakhs of people of Rs 2,500 crore, promising higher rates of return on their investments.

Assembly polls in Bengal are due in April-May 2021.
