The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Manipur led by Biren Singh has approved the Manipur State Cinema Policy, 2019 with an aim to improve the Manipuri film industry.
The decision was taken by the Manipur government recently at a cabinet meeting chaired by the Manipur Chief Minister in Imphal.
The Manipur government’s decision has been welcomed by the artistes and others associated with the Manipuri film industry including the Film Forum Manipur, the apex body of filmmakers.
Chairman of Manipur Film Forum S Mahgoljao Singh said that they welcomed the Cabinet decision to approve the Manipur State Cinema Policy and thanked the Chief Minister for taking proper action to promote the Manipur film industry.
Singh also said that they also urged the Chief Minister to take necessary action to fulfill the previous demand made by them saying that the standard of the contemporary Manipuri cinema has not been up to the desired level.
He further stated that the Manipur Film Forum had submitted three representations to the Chief Minister since October 2017 and the last representation was submitted on August 14 earlier this year.
Singh further reiterated that he is hopeful that the state government will look into the grievances of the members from the film fraternity with the approval of the Manipur State Cinema Policy.
It may be mentioned that, at present Manipur has only one cinema hall which screens local language films and the forum demands that more cinema halls should be set up.
