India’s Manju Rani entered final at the AIBA Women World Boxing Championships on Saturday after defeating Chuthamat Raksat of Thailand in women’s 48 kg category in Ulan Ude, Russia.
Sixth seed Manju assured herself at least a silver medal by her maiden appearance in the event as she thrashed her Thai opponent 4-1 in the last four.
Earlier in the day, six-time world champion and India legend MC Mary Kom had to settle for a bronze medal after she lost in the semi-finals of the women’s 51kg category.
Mary Kom lost 1-4 in the semis against Busenaz Cakiroglu of Turkey to win her 8th medal at the World Boxing Championships, making her the most successful boxer of all time – male or female – in the competition’s history.
Mary has won 6 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze so far in her career.
Later in the evening today, two Assam women boxers will be in action.
Jamuna Boro will be up against top seed and former Asian Games bronze medallist Huang Hsiao-Wen of Chinese Taipei while, Lovlina Borgohain’s opponent is China’s Yang Liu, who shocked top seed Chen Nien-Chin in the quarters.
