Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh has announced a project of Rs 215 crore for Meghalaya Milk Mission, to be utilized for various training under dairy farm, chilling centre and purchase of milch animal.

Singh addressed the launching programme of the mission and said that the Meghalaya Milk Mission will contribute significantly in achieving the Centre's goal of doubling farmer's income by 2022 through endorsement and promotion of milk business in the state.

The Union Minister announced the Rs 215 crore project through the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for Meghalaya Milk Mission. He said that the Milk Mission will help the state to produce milk instead of importing it, and also generate alternate livelihoods for the rural populace in the dairy sector.

Singh also added that 2000 farmers would directly benefit from the Mission over the next four years. The project consists of 2000 dairy farm units each with a provision for five cows, sheds, storage room, animal insurance, 79 bulk milk coolers of 500 litre capacity and 13 milk tankers of 3,000 litre capacity.

The Mission will also address problems of unemployment and facilitate self-employment in the state and also check the absence of organised marketing channels in the dairy sector in Meghalaya.
