Mizoram Governor addresses almost empty ground on R-Day

Due to the state wide boycott, the Mizoram governor Kummanam Rajasekharan on Saturday had to address an almost empty ground on the 70th Republic Day.

An organisation of civil society groups and student bodies, NGO Coordination Committee called they boycott, against the Citizenship (Amendment)  Bill 2016.

The Mizoram Police said that no member from the general public attended the function except ministers, legislators and top officials.

However, despite the display of placards near the venue, the Republic Day celebrations passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.

It is to be mentioned that the along with Assam the other North Eastern states have been protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and Mizoram too have followed suit. In a shocking protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, more than 30,000 people hit the streets of different towns in Mizoram on Wednesday and staged demonstration against the Central government.

Photos and videos of the protest went viral on social media. The protesters were seen shouting slogans and holding banners, which read, "Hello China, Bye Bye India".
