Nagaland opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill

Nagaland opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill

After Meghalaya, now it is Nagaland government that has opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016. The Neiphiu Rio led government's cabinet on Wednesday evening had taken up this decision.

It may be noted here that, at a time when in Assam, BJP is portraying a dual stand and its ally AGP is raising their voice sitting in their offices; simultaneously BJP, NDPP, NPP and JD (U) coalition government in Nagaland has expressed its stand against the proposed Bill firmly.

This move of the Nagaland government has made it clear that for them, their regional interest is greater than their party interest.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that the government has opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill as it poses as a threat to the Naga Community, adding that the matter will be discussed with the centre.

Rio stated that Nagaland is a reserved state, it has an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and as such the Bill may damage the interests of the state and its people.
