Known for her significant contribution to children's and women's literature, noted writer-social activist Padma Shri awardee Eli Ahmed will be conferred "Vayoshreshtha Samman-2019" by President of India Ram Nath Kovind on 3rd October, 2019 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
An all-rounder from the North-eastern state of Assam, Ahmed is a renowned writer, scriptwriter, director, lyricist, costume designer, actress, and a social activist, to mention just a few among what she has done in her life.
These awards are presented aspart of the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) on 1stOctober.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment ThaawarchandGehlot will preside over the function. Ministers of State for Social Justiceand Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar, Ram Das Athawale and Rattan Lal Katariawill also be present.
Vayoshreshtha Samman is a Scheme of awards instituted by theMinistry of Social Justice & Empowerment (D/o Social Justice &Empowerment) and gradually upgraded to the status of National Awards, forinstitutions involved in rendering distinguished service for the cause ofelderly persons especially indigent senior citizens and to eminent citizens inrecognition of their service/achievements.
Her books include "Romanthan" and "Asom Jyoti" and have risen to critical acclaim. She is also the Editor, Publisher and Proprietor of "OraniI", the only women magazine in Northeast since 1970.
She is best known for her play "Ami abhinoy koranoi," a drama based on physically handicapped children, child labour andchild education.
