The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 16 special teams for relief and rescue operation of Assam flood, informed Director General of NDRF S N Pradhan.
Pradhan stated that the flood situation in the state has improved slightly.
The flood situation in Assam is still serious, with over 26 lakh people affected in 26 districts; 89 have died so far.
The Morigaon district, which has been hit by the floods for over one month, is one of the worst hit with over 300 villages affected. Mayong circle in Morigaon has one of the highest affected villages, 150 in all, and heavy rains have made this year's floods even more difficult to handle.
On Tuesday, the river that flows down from neighbouring Meghalaya swelled up due to heavy rains and breached its banks as the huge volume of water could not enter the overflowing Brahmaputra in Morigaon district.
Union water resources minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat held a video conference with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday to take stock of the situation and measures taken to help affected people.
"To effectively manage relief and rehabilitation works, the union water resources minister assured that an amount of Rs 346 crore would be released immediately from his ministry to Assam government as the first installment under flood management programme (FMP)," said an official statement from CM's office.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 26 of the state's 33 districts are still reeling under floods. Nearly 45,000 people uprooted by floodwaters are still taking shelter in 391 relief camps.
