Darrang Police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with the mysterious death of a newly-married young woman, Bitumani Hazarika, at the residence of her in-laws at Naharbari village under Mangaldai PS on Monday afternoon.
SP Darrang, Sreejith T informed that Duti Ram Barua and Kushal Barua, father-in-law and brother-in-law of the victim respectively have been arrested while Kiriti Barua, husband of the victim is absconding. Kiriti Barua, a personnel of the 3rd APBn is presently posted at Shyampur PS of the district.
The SP denied physical involvement of the police personnel in the case, where the body of the victim burnt to ashes, was recovered from the bathroom of the residence reportedly at around 3 pm. He said that on the day of incident, Kiriti Barua was on duty as reported by the Officer in Charge.
However he didn't rule out the possibility of his indirect involvement, including mental torture, on the victim leading to her death. Tilak Hazarika, father of the victim and a resident of Jhakuapara, Rowta in Udalguri district had earlier lodged an FIR at Mangaldai PS in this connection. The police also detained the mother-in-law and the sister-in-law of the victim and recorded their statements following post-mortem of the body.
According to the family members of the victim, Bitumani had got married to Kiriti around two months ago following a love affair. The reason of the mysterious death of the woman is yet to be ascertained.
