No one to contest from Guwahati

No one to contest from Guwahati

Guwahati may be the pinnacle of the North East but there is no one serious to contest and represent the most prestigious constituency of the region.

Such is the pass Congress is running from post to pillar using the service of Akhil Gogoi for a good candidate from a non-Congress background with deep pocket.

The BJP is no better. Till the filing of this report, there is no serious candidate for the Guwahati seat and all the names cropping up are fringe players.

But the funny part came from Congress. For Guwahati, they are in such disarray that they approached at least half a dozen non-Congress lawyers and businessmen, media baron offering tickets and at least two of them came on record refusing the overture.

First, it was senior lawyer Kamal Naryan Choudhury who refused to accept the offer and then it was the turn of another senior lawyer Arup Borbora to refuse the Congress overture.

He came on media and said that the offer of the Congress was carried by Akhil Gogoi, exposing the latter that he was working for Congress.

There are also reports of now Congress shifting former IAS officer M G V K Bhanu from Tezpur to Guwahati.

The BJP also could not make a proper panel. It wanted to shift Ramen Deka from Mangaldoi denying ticket to sitting MP Bijoya Chakravarty, as she is 79. But Mr Deka refused to come here leaving the BJP to send a panel consisting the name of Queen Ojha, Rupam Goswami and Jayanta Malla Barua.

Only confirm a candidate for Guwahati is Pravajan Virodhi Mancha (PVM) leader Upamanyu Hazarika as Independent Candidate.
