NRC expose AASU’s lip service

NRC expose AASU’s lip service

After being thoroughly exposed by the NRC's complaint process where less than 500 objections have been submitted so far, the AASU today came up with a new demand that the Complaints should be accepted at the distinct level.

The organizations like AASU who claims to have lakhs of Bangladeshi in Assam, sat quietly during the objection process of NRC and did not file  objections pointing out the Bangladeshi persons in the NRC. Despite having one of the largest grass root networks, they miserably failed and limited their role to  press conferences and protest.

There was no systematic effort by the AASU to lodge objections against suspected Bangladeshi nationals anywhere in the state. The whole process exposed that AASU was merely doing the lip service on the influx issue and never really serious on the Bangladeshi identification.

Now the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and 30 organizations representing various ethnic communities today alleged that the Government of Assam was not doing enough to ensure that names of illegal migrants from Bangladesh are not included in the NRC.

The organizations further alleged that the government did not utilize Section 4.3 of the Citizenship Act that empowers the NRC officials to conduct suo moto investigation for verifying the nationality of the applicants.

The deadline for filing NRC-related claims and objections is December 15.

Addressing media-persons here, AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said that ethnic and student bodies were ready to help people in filing their objections against doubtful nationals so that an error-free NRC is prepared.

"So far, we have not demanded a deadline extension. Even if the government machinery comes into action now and assist the local people in filing objections, it will make a lot of difference," he added.

The organisations now demanded that citizens should be allowed to file their objections through the Deputy Commissioner's office in every district to make the process hassle-free and secure.
