36 lakh people of Assam who have originally applied in NRC have gone missing. With just three weeks to go before the closure of the claims and objection process, the NRC authorities and the Union Home ministry are baffled at that 35 lakh people are missing.
The final draft of the NRC had 40 lakh names excluded who could not prove their nationalities for various reasons. But authorities are baffled that even after extension of deadline, only 3.5 lakh people applied for their names to be included in the NRC.

Applied – 329 lakh
Enlisted – 289 Lakh
Excluded – 40 lakh
Reapplied – 3.5 lakh
Missing – 36.5 lakh
Last date of replication: December 15
The final draft was published on July 30. Since then more than 110 days have passed and shockingly 3 lakh people have not approached any NRC Seva Kendras claiming to be an Indian with further proof.
Initially it was thought that the strict guideline of the NRC authorities desisted them but it was later eased by Supreme Court but still 35 lah people have not applied.
This has sent both Dispur and Delhi scurrying for answer. With less and less number of people coming to the NSK in the last few weeks, this figure is unlikely to change a very dramatic change in the next three week, said the NRC authorities.
Even various organizations working in Assam as pressure groups are baffled by this.
The hunt is now on – Who are these 36 lakh people?
