One lakh Rohingyas to be moved to Bhasanchar: Bangladesh PM

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on May 23 said that around one lakh displaced Rohingya refugees would be shifted to Bhasanchar Island in Noakhali district of Bangladesh, till they can go back to their country.

6,000 workers have been deployed on the island to arrange for the accommodation of the refugees.

As per reports, Hasina made the announcement during her meeting with UN Under Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Dr Natalia Kanem.

"Bangladesh's upcoming monsoon may cause sufferings to the Rohingyas, so measures are being taken to provide them with temporary shelter in Bhashanchar" Hasina said.

It may be mentioned here that more than 7,00,000 Rohingyas fled a brutal military campaign launched in August last year in Myanmar and are currently residing in Bangladeshi refugee camps.
