Outrage over Bodoland University’s alleged decision to accept thesis only in English | VC dismisses all allegation
After an outrage followed over Bodoland University’s alleged decision to accept MPhil and PhD thesis only in English language, the university’s VC Prof Hemanta Kumar Baruah has dismissed all such allegations. “The university has never made any such decision. We have never asked our scholars to submit their thesis in English” Baruah said.
It may be mentioned here that some scholars of the university had recently come up with allegations that the university had asked them to submit dissertation and thesis paper only in English language. This had led to an outrage among the people of Assam.
AASU had condemned the alleged decision along with state BJP’s assurance to look into the matter.
However, Bodoland University VC Hemanta Kumar Baruah has dismissed all such allegations and said “Researchers of our university have been writing their thesis in Assamese, Bodo as well as English, depending on the subject.”
Addressing a press meet, Baruah said “There was a system of writing a thesis in Assamese. Recently, another decision was made by Gauhati University that researchers of other departments such as Bodo, Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit can submit their thesis in their own language. Here, when we made the rules in 2014, it was decided that a student of the Department of Assamese can write the thesis in Assamese or English. And since one of the examiner has to be from outside Assam, it sometimes becomes a bit problematic. There is no compulsion of language; however, one has to submit a summary in English.”
