On purely humanitarian grounds, over 1,900 Myanmarese children who fled to Mizoram with their families have been enrolled in various schools across the state receiving free education.

Education department director James Lalrinchhana on Tuesday said that the state government has been enrolling refugee children in schools since August.

"We can't ignore the request of migrant Myanmar leaders. We may also face backlash from the international community if education is not provided to the refugees, who escaped due to a humanitarian crisis," he told PTI.

Following a military coup that left Myanmar government in exile, sparking massive protests and crackdowns, Myanmerese nationals have been fleeing to Mizoram with whom the country's Chin state shares a 510 km long border.

Most of them are currently lodged in relief camps set up by locals in bordering villages.
