Padmashri recipient Sheela Borthakur passes away

Padmashri Dr. Sheela Borthakur an Indian social worker, educator, littérateur, and the founder president of the Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samity (SALSS) passed away in Tezpur on Sunday.

She was 85 yearsold.

Assam ChiefMinister Sarbananda Sonowal extended his condolence to the bereaved family.

Sheela Borthakur was born in 1935 in Jorhat district of Assam. She spent her early years in Dhaka and did her undergraduate studies at Jagannath Borooah College, Jorhat. After her marriage to Sanatan Borthakur, Dr. Sheela relocated to Tezpur and joined as a high school teacher. Later, she joined Darrang College where she taught Philosophy to undergraduate students. She was also the founder principal of the first women's college in Tezpur, Gopinath Bordoloi Kanya Mahavidyalaya.

Sheela Borthakur received the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padmashri in 2008.
