Plantation of Marijuana Mooted In Manipur


Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday informed that the government is mooting plantation of Marijuana at selected places for medicinal purposes to check plantation of illegal poppy plants at different areas of the state.

Speaking at the inaugural function of Horticulture and Soil Conservation office, the Chief Minister said that the government along with Horticulture department are minutely discussing on the matter and is exploring options “to provide livelihood for those engaged with plantation of poppy plants” by replacing it through growing of horticulture crops.

Reminding that “plantation of Marijuana at selected places for medical purposes has been legalized in some countries.” Singh, however, cautioned if growing of illegal poppy in certain districts of the state is not checked at the earliest, it will create many problems in the near future.

The CM also expressed satisfaction that 4000 Metric Tonnes of ginger grown in Pherzawl district was exported outside the state recently as well as 150 MT of organic pineapple products.
