Play Awareness Clips on Child Rape: SC to Movie Theatres

The Supreme Court of India has directed all cinemahalls across the country to play a short video clip to create awareness aboutsexual assault cases against children with helpline numbers.

Senior Advocate V Giri gave a slew of suggestions ashe is assisting the court as an amicus curiae saying that the child rape casesshould be effectively dealt with in the country. The suggestion has been givento a bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

Giri suggested that a short clip should benecessarily screened in every movie hall to spread awareness and a childhelpline number should also be displayed not only in such clips but also atvarious prominent places including schools and other places.

The court, moreover, directed the Centre to set up acentrally-funded exclusive court in all districts as it has taken note of thealarming rise in the number of rape incidents against children. The court furtherinstructed that these centrally-funded exclusive courts should be set up in alldistricts where 100 or more cases have been registered under the Protection ofChildren from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Giri also suggested to establish special juvenilepolice unit under section 19 of the POCSO Act.
