RS Passes National Medical Commission Bill

TheRajya Sabha on Thursday passed the National Medical Commission Bill forreplacing the Medical Council of India with a new body as it has been said asthe corruption-plagued body. The government has said it as one of the biggestreforms for medical education in the country.

Thebill was passed by a voice vote which seeks to repeal the Indian MedicalCouncil Act 1956 amid a walkout by AIADMK.

Thebill was passed by the Lok Sabha on July 29.

Whilereplying on the debate on the bill, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that theNational Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is already an institutionalizedbody which is conducting examinations in 13 languages. He further said thatonce the NMC bill is approved, exit examination will be implemented in the nextthree years.

TheMinister also stated that NEET counseling is completely transparent and thankedsenior Congress leader Ghulab Nabi Azad for his valuable suggestions.

TheNational Commission Bill has also a provision for making national standards inmedical education uniform by proposing that the final year MBBS exam be treatedas an entrance test for PG and a screening test for students who graduate in medicinefrom foreign countries.
